I just bought a Thunder 22, and I'm fairly new to shooting. In the past, I'd borrowed ear muffs from relatives. While looking at passive and active hearing protection, I found myself getting more confused.
Looking at the 3M Peltor Optime 105, it claims NRR of 30 dB, and effective for sounds around 105 dB.
The active earmuffs appear to have NRR around 20-22 dB, and cost twice as much. I saw one claiming 30dB passive, and then active protection that limits sound to 82dB. Is a set of electronic earmuffs with an NRR of 20 going to be less effective than a set of passive earmuffs with a rating of 30?
I can understand wanting to be able to hear quieter sounds like someone talking. What does everyone else prefer - active or passive? Anything else I should consider, besides fit/comfort?
