Bersa 644: best ammo?

145 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  JimmyG
I just picked up a Bersa 644, .22LR pistol. It's a ery nice pistol but seems to be ammo finicky. I've tried .22lr JHP [no good], Federal punch FMJ [no good]. They won't eject. It seems the rim is too think for the ejector.

I had some old loose rounds with an "F" stamped in the base that are round nose copper that worked perfectly, but I'm not sure what they are.

Can anyone make a recommendation?
Much thanks

Welcome Claypij, the 22lr rounds that I know of with a headstamp "F" are by Federal. With the Federal Punch FMJ it may be due to nickel plated rim and LOW muzzle velocity.
If you have any of the "F" marked bullets go here 22 Ammo, 22 LR, 17HRM Ammo | Federal Premium and compare the bullet to their round nose copper bullets.
I would also measure the rim thickness of the "F" bullet with calipers for future reference and comparisons.
It also very well be a matter of using bullets with a higher muzzle velocity to eject better.

I think I figured it out. The ammo that won't work in this Bersa all have this in common... their brass hulls are a bit longer [1mm] than the usual .22lr brass. Hence, when the ejector grips the rim, the extra length of the brass doesn't clear the chamber and gets refed as the slide returns forward.

Excellent Claypij, that would taken me a while to get there. I'm gonna check this on all of my 22LR ammo as I have a Taurus TX that occasionally has a very similar problem. Thanks for posting.
