Attention - Password and Security Update

4768 Views 15 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Tony1990
Hey all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

Guess your going to loose members. I see no reason to change pass words as their no real information about me here. I have the bad luck to be a member on several of your take over boards. To change for sake of change is silly . I will I guess be forced to change. Which I see no reason to do . Or be dropped or what ever your going to do to those that like what we have. I visit approx. 30 boards a day . same pass word You group not all that special to have word just for you .

In ten Years I have never forced 1 member of my boards to change a pass word let alone every 365 days I hope all the members of you boards stand up and say NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
un happy Member.

Not one of the brighter ideas I've heard come out of a forum board, especially following a couple of unexplained days of being off line. In the three plus years I've been a member, this forum has struggled to exist, don't make it worse by requiring changes that need not be make. It's hard enough to come up with and remember a new password, much less to have to change it yearly. I am forced to do this on several DOD related sites and it's nothing but a pain. Yes, you'll lose members over this idea.
Thanks for the "potential risk" warning. Better to be safe than sorry. Password changed.
I know it's an inconvenience, but protecting your account here will protect this site from being vandalized, and will help protect accounts on other sites. The basic info (ie. email) that could be gleamed from a hacked account could compromise other accounts on different sites, ones that may have access to more sensitive information. Adding complexity puts a stopper on that happening.

An enforced password change is coming. I'd advice against changing your password now, as the site will require you to do it again later.

I will visit till you force change .Then you will be 1 member less . On several of you new acquired boards You can use all excuses you want. Fact is your group only one doing this .No other boards are, that I go to and that is many Their are other Bersa boards like the oldest Bersachat.com with over 8,000 members. for a example Bersafourms.com . More members and more traffic yet 1 time and pass word good. . Hackers are mainly from china and they don't come thru a current member account That I ever heard of .

Your group and others like yours only but these boards to make money with ads. Not because you like that brand of firearm , boat. or breed of animal . Your only interest in $$$$ For many here these pistols are a hobby . For some a passion and this is a place to meet and share that. If you keep up setting members might find a almost empty house . Like I said other Bersa boards . This is the smallest and least visited of them .

Have a nice day Nother personal against you Its a job But your group approach is not member friendy

The reason we're doing this is due to a hacker gaining encrypted information from us. The security of members accounts is very important to us and although a members personal information or private information such as credit card info is not stores on the site, many people use the same password for multiple sites. This could create a potential hole for a hacker to get your info which is what we would like to avoid. The forced password change for now is to unsure there are no holes on the forum and the one that should happen a year from now can be revisited then and we can look into if it is still needed on the site.

Seems you need to fix your security system Not force the members to change pass words which you just admitted a hacker could get to change or not

No matter your reasoning Many here are up set and will likely leave . I would think idea is to get members not run them off . Not just here but you other boards you have acquired last few months. I am on a few of those also and see the members resentment.

There is a message on the "admin" section yesterday that states not to change password until notified or you will have to change it again.

Ain't the first time I screwed up due to not reading the fine print and I am sure it will not be my last. Anyway I am used to changing my 8 plus character passwords every 90 days. Not that I enjoy it just used to it.
Thanks for the heads up 9UC, I have a new password ready now if I have to change again.

In my last few years on active duty, prior to retiring in accounting and finance/military Pay, as a customer service supervisor, I had to be on three separate computer systems and had to change passwords every 90 days. Hated it, so I have no love for the military retiree systems that I have to change much less a forum I do for pleasure. A one time change for admins perception of a threat, Ok, I'll buy off on that, but a continuing change every year, I, like Bersastud, don't buy off on it. At least, for the time being as I like this forum, I will change at least once. Beyond a year, I may drop out.

The password change on some kind of schedule may be a sign of the times, another of my regular forums I visit also is going to require password changes regularly.
Bummer.
I fat fingered my new password 2 times today because I was trying to enter my password with one hand while holding a cup of coffee in the other hand. Not a very good idea if you have some capital letters to enter. Glad they give you 5 chances to do it right.
